The Genesis of Flight     2000

In the first week of October, the long-awaited Genesis of Flight volumes arrived. This fine book has been examined and praised by scholars and members of the Academy community. In celebration of this happy event, the Friends hosted a luncheon for 60 guests, including authors, editors, sponsors, and those who worked for the past six years to produce the book. Present also were three ladies of the Gimbel family.

Reception

A gala reception held in the evening at Doolittle Hall was attended by about 200 guests. Dr. Tom Crouch, Senior Curator of Aeronautics, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, and one of the book's principal authors, gave the keynote address. Dr. Crouch's presentation was followed by an introduction to the CD-Rom that is found within each volume. The CD-Rom was produced by Word One, Inc. of Colorado Springs and provides a beautifully illustrated interactive presentation of the book. The reception was enhanced by an exhibit of priceless materials from the Collection.
